Empathy and respect.

If you think about , it’s the very least

we owe our fellow citizens.”

The journey

inside a man

will always

begin and end

with a woman.

She taught us

to peer up at the sky in contentment rather than glee,

to leave the grass un-trampled, to look for food

where you’d least expect to find it.

She is

every shade

of blue and green

and brown and grey

and when night falls

she continues to rise,

moving every current,

every tide.

When you awake to the sun

remember

that it is the same sun

that existed 3 billion years ago–

my mother, your mother,

was there, too.

In her younger years

she raised her first child,

told them they’d never need to walk alone

that if they fell, to trust her

that if they lived, to thank her

and if they died, to thank her, too.

She is never prideful,

ever present, ever strong.

She surrounds me

and fills my bones.

Earth:

our first mother,

our only home.

at the ocean

my intention,

my desire,

my secret wish

is to simplify life.

many men

have tried It;

we heard about it.

It didn’t work.

many women

have tried It;

we didn’t hear about it.

(proof enough) It didn’t work.

we searched for It

in churches and mosques,

temples and tall, gray shopping malls.

we listened for It

at TED talks, college lecture halls

and sports stadiums with 80,000 seats.

when fate

grants you power,

what do you do with It?

men decided to seek It only in themselves,

simplicity and peace and glory

owned by one hand, one heart, one tear.

I ask: where does the tear come from?

Where does the water come from?

I’ll start by listening there.

through my window

the intersection

of tree

and sky,

the lines

they paint

across pale blue horizons

while two black specks of bird chase each other.

***

Truth,

expanding over snow-dipped houses–

it will never be found beneath my pen.

***

the earth knows things my mind cannot see.

but I can still sit back,

exhale,

and soak in the view:

a single, conscious moment in the universe.

Breath Incarnate

Embracing Forever

Peace taken up by the flesh has a rhythm to it.  A field of frozen grass and falling snow, mixed with true inhabitants, will ripple with tongues of steam.  Life will move in and out of itself, and possibilities will disperse from their smoky origins, drift into the branches of trees at the field’s edge, and nestle into nooks beneath the boughs.

We share a breath that’s always breathing– here and there and all at once– a breath that snuck into itself and made a circle, and then snuck into itself and made a circle, and then snuck into itself and made a circle.  We share a breath that claims every face as her own, every emptiness as one of her dwellings.  She presses against our root, drawing everything near, and pauses for a moment, losing her every distinction into our silence.  Then we give her back, and she washes out all the…
